P.G. Wodehouse football story


The dashing writer P.G. Wodehouse wrote a short story about football. It’s the 11 v 11 game but it’s toffs, and one particular chap called Bob who gets to play in the big Varsity match - that’s Oxford v. Cambridge in big shorts.

It’s a jolly zippy read, and quite amusing. The big match is described through the eyes of a young lady who doesn’t usually attend matches. The two people in front of her are dismissed as wearing a poor taste in suits. It appeared in print in The Strand magazine in 1906. Thanks to digital age wizzardry I’ve just read it on my Kindle e-reader. Oh the electronic marvels, am now reading stories that would otherwise be very difficult to track down.
